Litter continues to be an increasing problem around our City and, although Council employees regularly carry out monitoring in the city centre shopping areas issuing fines to offenders, there is no such enforcement outside of the city centre and it shows, and is getting worse. Despite tough legislation and penalties for dropping litter there is no enforcement and therefore no incentive to stop.
This petition calls for a month-long pilot scheme in an area of the city that already has residents that are actively litter picking on a regular basis and need further support to change the behaviour and attitudes of those who persist in dropping litter.
Council employees working shifts to cover a broad time period, resources permitting, would very soon witness litter being dropped thereby covering any costs associated with the monitoring. If this pilot exercise was successful it could then be rolled out to all areas of the city.
